My take on this week’s Friday Fictioneers photo prompt. Lady Liberty has the ability to capture the imagination of so many people, but that imagination may not always be what you’d expect.

The boat moved along the African coast. A little boy stood on his tippy-toes, white knuckles gripping the railing, transfixed by the view ashore. He watched as a herd of grey giraffe were corralled in the distance. Behind them, their sandaled shepherd held a brilliant torch to light their way. Even at such a distance, the boy could see the animals playfully gallop and hear their voices carried crystal clear over the water. He was filled with wonder.

“Jacob, get away from the railing!”

“But mom, I wanna see the giraffes.”

“Don’t be silly, there’s no giraffes in New York.”
